Environmental Scan Informs Strategic Plan Updates
Goal 1: Engage Our World and Region through Discovery and the Advancement of Knowledge
The team identified multiple opportunities to strengthen UC Merced’s research impact by focusing on globally relevant, world-class research, while working to deepen connections between researchers and the regional context. The group recommended a sustained focus on outcomes that benefit the nation, the Central Valley and California, while leveraging the university’s R1 designation to attract top-tier researchers and graduate students from across the country and the world. Increasing opportunities in STEM fields can be further leveraged to accelerate campus research growth.
Goal 2: Develop Future Scholars and Leaders
The team identified key opportunities to strengthen UC Merced’s student success outcomes and distinguish the campus within California’s higher education landscape. Emphasis was placed on differentiating UC Merced from California State Universities by highlighting the long-term benefits of a UC education, including access to graduate and professional programs and higher lifetime earnings. The university’s low faculty-to-student ratios were noted as creating a personalized, high-touch environment that supports student achievement and fosters meaningful mentorship. UC Merced’s relatively low average student debt compared to other R1 institutions was also seen as critical for maintaining accessibility for students from historically underserved populations.
Goal 3: Cultivate a Culture of Dignity and Respect for Our Community
UC Merced’s strong first-generation student community is a defining institutional strength, offering opportunities to enhance retention and deepen students’ sense of belonging. UC Merced’s ability to provide high-impact opportunities—such as undergraduate research, work-study, on-campus employment, and on-campus paid internships—remains a key lever for promoting engagement, professional development, and student success.
